LeBron James’ shift to Polymarket over Labor Day Weekend marked a significant moment for the predictions market platform, signaling broader developments in its operations. On the same Saturday that Ohio State University began its college football season, James shared a video on social media platform X, announcing his collaboration with Polymarket. It drew attention as fans of college football watched Ohio State dominate Miami (Ohio) 56-3, raising curiosity among stakeholders about potential athlete endorsements tied to James.
By Tuesday, Polymarket had revealed the details when it launched a high-profile advertisement that gained over 15.5 million views on James’ X page. Polymarket, after a relaxed three-day Labor Day Weekend, debuted an eye-catching 90-second commercial crafted by renowned filmmaker Peter Berg, known for the popular TV series Friday Night Lights. The ad featured several celebrities, including Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Richard Sherman, John Leguizamo, and Spike Lee, aligning its release with the introduction of "Squads," a new social feature within the US Polymarket app.
Per Polymarket’s press announcement, Squads aims to create an interactive space where users can engage in market discussions, make predictions, and trade directly on the platform. Travis VanderZanden, Polymarket’s chief growth officer, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “People are constantly debating what’s going to happen next with their friends and sharing predictions in group chats. With Squads, we’re bringing the conversation and trading together so friends can follow the events they care about and make their predictions in one place."
The advertisement incorporated slapstick humor reminiscent of classic Nike commercials, with Manning engaging in comedic antics, catching a football from a jugs machine while dodging tackles. The playful interactions continued with James and Jeter exchanging greetings and handshakes, showcasing a light-hearted take on sports and predictions. Recently, the New York Yankees became the first Major League Baseball team to establish a partnership with Polymarket.
While Polymarket has not disclosed the ad's total production costs, it is speculated to be in the millions given Berg’s involvement, alongside expenses for post-production, set design, and licensing. Last month, Polymarket announced that it seeks a valuation of $21 billion in a new funding round led by Donald Trump Jr.'s investment company, 1789 Capital.
Following the commercial's debut, Polymarket swiftly rose to become the leading free finance app on the App Store, surpassing competitors such as Kalshi, Capital One Mobile, PayPal, and Venmo.
However, the campaign has attracted criticism from anti-problem gambling advocates. Athletes involved in the promotional effort took to social media to share their perspectives. Leguizamo highlighted the fast-paced nature of prediction markets with his commercial tagline, while Manning humorously suggested he might need to resume playing football, prompting Sherman to playfully challenge him on the field regarding the prediction market.
The competitive landscape for customer engagement in sports betting and predictions is heating up, particularly following the historic PASPA decision. This NFL season marks significant involvement from traditional sportsbooks like DraftKings, which are set to feature event contracts across major US states, including California, Texas, and Florida.
Unlike regulated sportsbooks, prediction markets allow users aged 18 and older to trade on sports-event contracts. Craig Carton, a sports talk radio host, criticized his fellow athletes for endorsing Polymarket, labeling its operations as “unregulated” and potentially harmful to some individuals and families.
Meanwhile, a Bank of America report revealed that households participating in online betting held median deposit account balances that were 59% higher than those who refrained from such activities, raising concerns among some observers about a blend of entertainment and investment in gambling markets.
As the debate continues around regulation in sports betting, it remains clear that industries such as prediction markets will be closely monitored moving forward. Recently, a deputy general counsel for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) posted an ad seeking assistance in drafting formal rules for event contracts, suggesting significant changes in regulatory frameworks may be on the horizon.
The Polymarket advertisement campaign launched just before the NFL's regular-season opener, setting the stage for an exciting matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the defending AFC Champion New England Patriots. In their last encounter, the Seahawks emerged victorious in a 29-13 game. As for predictions, Polymarket traders estimated a 62% chance of a Seahawks win in the upcoming opener, compared to a 39% probability favoring the Patriots. A $100 contract on the Patriots is projected to pay out $247.35, should they secure an upset victory.
LeBron James’ prior partnership with DraftKings concluded earlier this summer, according to Yahoo Finance.
