Flutter Entertainment is currently assessing the future of around 100 Paddy Power betting shops across the UK and Ireland, raising concerns among employees that approximately 400 jobs may be at risk. This review is part of the company's response to increasing gambling taxes, surging operational costs, and heightened competition in the online gambling sector.
While Flutter has confirmed that the roster for these shops is under review, it has not made any decisions regarding furloughing or permanently closing stores. Employees in the affected shops will likely have the opportunity to apply for available roles at other locations within the company, as feasible.
This evaluation occurs amid ongoing challenges in the retail betting landscape in the UK, which is grappling with rising operating expenses, competitive pressures, and a shift toward online gambling. A spokesperson for Flutter UK and Ireland stated, "We are incredibly proud of our high street estate, and it remains a key part of our business in communities across the UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, we have had to take the extremely difficult decision to conduct this review."
The company attributed the review partly to the increase in the Remote Gaming Duty in the UK, which has significantly raised the tax burden on online gambling revenue. The spokesperson further noted, "The high street trading environment has been challenging for a number of years given rising costs, fierce competition, economic uncertainty, and the shift to online, but we also face a material impact from the higher gambling taxes announced in last year’s UK Budget. Our immediate priority at this time is to support those colleagues affected by this announcement."
In addition to these developments, Flutter has seen a change in leadership with CEO Peter Jackson resigning and Dan Taylor taking over the position. This review of Paddy Power reflects the mounting pressure on UK betting operators as the retail gambling market undergoes significant shifts due to increasing taxes and evolving consumer habits.
