The Star Sydney will remain under regulatory management until June 2027, as the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has extended the appointment of its manager to oversee operations. The suspension of The Star Sydney’s casino licence, which began in October 2022 following the first Bell Review, is not set to be lifted at this time. Nick Weeks will continue in his role as manager until 30 June 2027.
Despite the ongoing suspension, The Star Sydney will continue its operations. However, the casino faces significant financial and operational hurdles as it works to implement necessary reforms and rebuild its business. Bruce Mathieson Jr., who became CEO in December, is spearheading the turnaround strategy.
In Queensland, the planned suspension of The Star Gold Coast’s casino license for 90 days has been postponed to 31 March 2027. This was initially scheduled to start on 30 September 2026 but was delayed following advice from Special Manager Nicholas Weeks and an assessment of the progress in the casino's remediation efforts.
These extensions in both New South Wales and Queensland indicate that Star’s operations in Australia will continue to be under stringent regulatory oversight through 2027.
