Polymarket, a platform specializing in prediction markets, has announced the termination of Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Modabber amid an internal investigation into its promotional strategies.
This investigation, which caught the attention of regulators and concerned investors, revealed contentious marketing practices that led to Modabber's dismissal. Notably, Modabber's exit signals the end of his ongoing association with Polymarket's founder and CEO, Shayne Coplan. He had been with the company since his hiring in 2024 as one of its initial executives.
Reports indicate that a separation agreement is currently in the works, although neither Polymarket nor Modabber has issued public statements regarding this termination.
The inquiry centered on allegations that Polymarket used staged betting videos, collaborated with social media influencers without clear disclosures, and portrayed simulated trades as if they illustrated genuine customer profits. These marketing tactics were highlighted following a Wall Street Journal investigation earlier this year, which uncovered that some online creators had shared misleading videos showing customers purportedly winning around $1.9 million on the platform. These deceptions were part of a broader initiative aimed at attracting new users to Polymarket's offerings.
The investigation also expanded beyond advertising practices. A separate inquiry by Politico suggested that over $2.5 million in payments were funneled through Modabber’s personal PayPal account to more than 800 recipients between January 2025 and February 2026. At least $350,000 of that total reportedly went to influencers, raising important compliance and disclosure concerns. This coincides with Polymarket's recent changes intended to improve its internal controls and regulatory adherence.
Modabber's firing raises questions about whether Polymarket is attempting to enhance its reputation in light of its initial steps towards a potential Initial Public Offering. However, the company has yet to make any public statements regarding speculation about an IPO.
