In an exclusive discussion with iGaming Business, Mateo Lenoble, Kambi's director for Latin America, expressed concerns that the current ban on betting operators in Brazil is impeding progress and eroding trust within the industry. He emphasized that even if operations were to resume quickly, the legal uncertainties created by the ban would remain a significant issue. Lenoble highlighted that the lack of clear regulations is detrimental to sporting integrity and poses risks of illegal gambling and match-fixing.
He noted that without a regulated environment, bettors are likely to turn to unlicensed platforms, which diminishes the government's ability to enforce regulations and increases the risk of corruption in sports.
In response to questions about Kambi's growth in Brazil, Lenoble acknowledged that the ban has disrupted the company's plans in the country. He pointed out that Kambi operates exclusively in regulated markets, and the provisional measure halting betting activities has been a setback.
Discussing the prospects for a return to the market, he remarked that while Brazil's gambling landscape is attractive, uncertainties regarding future regulations linger. He mentioned his talks at the SBC Summit in Lisbon about the potential for betting operators to return under a revised regulatory framework, where Kambi would be willing to re-enter and support partners.
Lenoble confirmed that Kambi has significant clients in Brazil who relied on their sports betting platform prior to the ban. He expressed solidarity with these partners, many of whom are facing challenges due to the provisional measure. Some clients operate solely in Brazil, while others have wider geographic coverage, reducing their immediate risk.
On the issue of match-fixing, Lenoble reiterated that a regulated market is essential for preventing such activities and safeguarding sports integrity. He underscored Kambi's commitment to regulation as a means to combat these issues effectively.
Regarding partnerships, he stated that Kambi collaborates with several major organizations to address match-fixing and is a member of the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA). Additionally, Kambi operates its own integrity department dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of its betting platforms.
In closing, Lenoble warned that the shift of gamblers to illegal markets due to the ban could compromise sports integrity. He reiterated that an unregulated environment limits government oversight, making it more challenging to implement necessary protections against corruption in sports.
