Kambi's Mateo Lenoble Discusses Brazil's Betting Ban and Sports Integrity Risks

In an interview with iGaming Business, Mateo Lenoble, Kambi's director for Latin America, expressed concern that Brazil's ban on betting operators is stifling growth and eroding confidence in the market. He noted that even a swift return to operations would not fully mitigate the legal uncertainties created by the ban. Lenoble emphasized that the lack of clear regulations not only poses challenges for business but also undermines the integrity of sports competitions.

Lenoble argued that effective regulation and oversight are crucial in the battle against illegal gambling and match-fixing. He explained that without a proper regulatory framework, bettors often turn to unregulated platforms, diminishing the ability of authorities to maintain control and increasing the risks associated with the sport.

When asked about the impact of the betting ban on Kambi's growth in Brazil, Lenoble acknowledged that the prohibition disrupts the projects Kambi had been pursuing in the country. He affirmed the company's commitment to regulated markets and expressed openness to returning to Brazil if a new regulatory framework is established. However, he warned that uncertainty surrounding the market is likely to persist.

Lenoble mentioned that while Kambi has a limited number of partnerships in Brazil, the existing clients are significant. Before the provisional ban, these clients utilized Kambi’s comprehensive sports betting platform and are currently facing difficulties due to the new restrictions. Kambi is committed to supporting its partners during this uncertain time, especially those who are solely focused on the Brazilian market.

He addressed concerns that the halt in legal betting could lead to an uptick in match-fixing. "Regulated markets are essential in the fight against match-fixing and maintaining sports integrity," he stated.

Lenoble confirmed that Kambi collaborates with prominent global organizations to combat match-fixing and is a member of the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA). The company also maintains its own integrity department to protect clients and ensure they offer secure betting options.

Responding to the question of how the ban could push gamblers into illegal markets, Lenoble reiterated that a well-regulated sector makes it easier for authorities to tackle illegal gambling. He warned that the loss of regulatory power could impede the implementation of necessary safeguards, thereby threatening the integrity of sports in Brazil.
