Altenar Accuses Sportradar of Market Manipulation

Altenar has filed formal complaints with both the European Union and UK competition authorities, accusing Sportradar of leveraging its market dominance to hinder access to live sports data and betting odds. The company claims that Sportradar has blocked its access to information tied to exclusive agreements with major leagues such as the NBA, MLB, ATP, and NHL, while continuing to provide that data to its partners, ORAKO and NSoft.

Altenar argues that this limitation has severely affected its competitive abilities. Additionally, it contends that Sportradar has conditioned access to vital data and betting odds on the purchase of its Managed Trading Services (MTS). Altenar eventually agreed to acquire MTS, which it had previously stated was unnecessary for its operations.

In light of these allegations, Altenar is calling on the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to examine Sportradar's practices. A representative from Altenar stated, “We believe Sportradar is using its control of essential sports data to shut out businesses with a competing offer. This is bigger than Altenar: bookmakers across the EU and UK need a choice of suppliers and a market that supports competition and innovation. We are asking the European Commission and the CMA to intervene and ensure that independent providers can compete on fair terms.”

In response, a Sportradar representative indicated that they were not aware of any recent complaints from Altenar. However, they acknowledged that Altenar had made threats to file complaints to competition authorities in February of this year. Sportradar dismissed the latest actions by Altenar as unnecessary attempts to exert pressure amid ongoing commercial disputes. The company reiterated its commitment to comply with antitrust and other applicable laws.

These complaints are in addition to four lawsuits that Altenar filed against Sportradar in the U.S. in April 2023.
