OpenBet, a prominent provider of betting and gaming technology, reported that it processed over 175 million bets and $3 billion in wagers during a historic World Cup competition. This event marks the most substantial betting activity ever recorded on OpenBet's global platform, showcasing its reliability during peak times.
The UK market saw particular growth due to England reaching the semi-finals, with the quarter-final against Norway attracting nearly 5 million pre-match bets. This was closely followed by the game against Argentina, which generated approximately 4.65 million bets.
The introduction of OpenBet's enhanced BetBuilder and Player Prop offerings significantly contributed to this success. New markets, such as ‘either player to score’ and ‘player to be fouled,’ were launched for the first time, resulting in 23 million Player Prop bets processed, reflecting a 130% increase compared to the Qatar 2022 tournament. The final match between Spain and Argentina alone accounted for 831,000 BetBuilder bets, which is 39% more than the previous World Cup.
The tournament indicated a shift in betting behavior among fans, with ten of the 20 most common bet combinations featuring Player Goals or Player Stats selections—up from just four in 2022, none of which included player stats. Bets on player stats markets saw nearly a fivefold increase compared to the last World Cup.
In-play betting also gained traction, especially during the knockout rounds, where it represented about one in every six bets. These live bets tended to carry significantly higher stakes than pre-match offerings.
In addition to its bet offerings, OpenBet provided Managed Trading Services for major platform clients worldwide, which included crafting odds, delivering trading content, and managing risk throughout the tournament.
OpenBet Locator™ facilitated more than 200 million location checks during the World Cup in regulated U.S. states, enhancing its reputation as a top-tier partner for leading operators. The company ensured uninterrupted service from the start of the tournament until the end, adapting capacity to meet increasing demand.
Nikos Konstakis, President of OpenBet, stated, "A World Cup is one of the defining moments for our industry, and this was the largest betting event our platform has ever supported. What stands out beyond the numbers is the evolution of player behavior. Fans are no longer just backing a result; they are crafting narratives about individual players. Our expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop offerings fulfilled this demand while providing the high-margin products operators need. Sustained peak load across a six-week tournament poses different challenges compared to a single event, and our platform managed it exceptionally well. The most prominent operators trust us with the events that matter most, and this was the largest of them all."
