New Zealand's Department of Internal Affairs has launched the application process for its first online casino licenses, making a significant stride towards regulating the country's iGaming market. This initiative allows operators to apply for one of the fifteen available licenses.
Applicants must submit their applications through the Government Electronic Tenders Service by August 14. The application fee for each license is set at NZD 19,000 (USD 11,082).
Under the new regulations, applicants are limited to requesting a maximum of three licenses, necessitating proof of at least NZD 7.5 million (USD 4.38 million) in available capital. Additionally, they must provide identification verification documents, a credit report, a criminal record check, and evidence of their financial capacity. Information regarding any previous regulatory breaches and potential legal conflicts must also be disclosed.
Entain, a notable player in the gaming industry, has already shown interest in applying for the maximum number of licenses available—three in total.
The licensing framework stems from the Online Gambling Act, which marks the first legal structure for online casino regulation in New Zealand. Although some operators advocated for a quicker market rollout, regulators emphasized that the chosen timeline is essential for conducting thorough assessments of operators, implementing consumer protection measures, and preventing gambling-related harm before online casino services commence.
