Flutter Reviews 100 Paddy Power Shops, 400 Jobs at Risk

Flutter Entertainment is considering the future of up to 100 Paddy Power betting shops across the UK and Ireland, a move that puts approximately 400 jobs at risk. This review emerges as the company grapples with increasing gambling taxes, rising operational costs, and intensifying competition in the online gambling sector.

While Flutter has confirmed that it is reviewing the staffing at these shops, no decisions have yet been made regarding potential furloughs or closures. Employees at the impacted locations may have the opportunity to apply for positions at other retail outlets within the company, contingent on availability.

The review occurs within a challenging environment for the retail betting industry in the UK, which is contending with higher operating costs, competitive pressure, and an uptick in online gambling activity.

A spokesperson for Flutter UK and Ireland commented on the situation, stating, "We are incredibly proud of our high street estate, and it remains a key part of our business in communities across the UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, we have had to take the extremely difficult decision to conduct this review."

The spokesperson cited the increase in the Remote Gaming Duty as a major factor behind the heightened taxation on online gambling revenues. They further emphasized, "The high street trading environment has been challenging for a number of years given rising costs, fierce competition, economic uncertainty, and the shift to online, but we also face a material impact from the higher gambling taxes announced in last year’s UK Budget. Our immediate priority at this time is to support those colleagues affected by this announcement."

In addition to the review, Flutter announced a leadership change with the resignation of CEO Peter Jackson, who is being succeeded by Dan Taylor. This review not only underscores the increasing pressure on UK betting-shop operators but also highlights how rising taxes and evolving customer behavior are reshaping the retail gambling landscape.
