Jason Robins, the co-founder and CEO of DraftKings, shared insights about the company's journey from a daily fantasy sports startup to a global gaming powerhouse during an interview with SBC Leaders podcast's host, Sue Schneider.

Robins reflected on how his corporate background, alongside that of his co-founders, positioned DraftKings for success. He recounted how the company began as a DFS competitor before the repeal of PASPA opened the doors to regulated online sports betting, which significantly changed the landscape.

In the early days, DraftKings was focused exclusively on providing users with an enhanced daily fantasy sports experience. Robins noted that initially, the debate over whether DFS constituted real-money gaming caught him off guard. "We didn’t even think of what we were doing as gaming; we were thinking of it as fantasy sports," he remarked. He acknowledged that while it became evident that DFS was a game of skill, it was surprising to realize that perceptions could differ so widely.

In those formative years, sports betting was not on DraftKings' radar, according to Robins. As the company grew into one of the leading online sports betting operators in the U.S., alongside FanDuel, Robins characterized DraftKings as a "unicorn". Unlike many companies that sold their technology, DraftKings faced casino giants and long-established sportsbooks as states began to legalize sports betting following the end of PASPA.

During the time the Supreme Court was evaluating NCAA vs. Murphy, the leadership at DraftKings focused on developing a strong sports betting proposition, despite feeling unsure about entering a new product vertical. Robins stated, "Really, for us, it was more that this was the only option other than selling out cheap… We said we’d rather take a shot, and if it fails, it fails."

Robins and Schneider discussed the grueling challenges gaming innovators often confront. Robins emphasized that pursuing innovation is not for the weak-hearted. Among the significant obstacles faced by DraftKings were the regulatory processes in various states, going public amid the COVID-19 pandemic when sports activities were halted, and launching a sports betting product with little prior expertise.

“There were a lot of moments that felt like they were one step away from death,” Robins remarked. He expressed gratitude for having "dodged quite a few bullets" during this challenging journey.

As DraftKings developed into sports betting and later expanded into online casino gaming, Robins highlighted the company's latest venture into prediction markets. He suggested that this new product aligns with the same core story of innovating in a competitive landscape. "I think it’s the same formula, and the same type of opportunity where we can really make a move," he stated, noting that the core business competitors are currently distracted, presenting a unique chance for DraftKings.

When Schneider asked Robins for advice he would give to aspiring gaming entrepreneurs, he reiterated the importance of being prepared for challenges, particularly in a regulated environment. "You’ve got to be ready to deal with all the noise," he advised. He cautioned that breaking into the gaming sector, especially with its competitive nature, can be especially daunting.
