Operators with a Swedish gambling licence reported SEK27.4bn (PS2.1bn/EUR2.4bn/$2.6bn) in revenue in 2022, a 5.1% rise from the previous year.
The Swedish regulator Spelinspektionen has provided preliminary data that shows the online segment grew by 6% to SEK1.7bn, compared to SEK1.6bn achieved by the sector in the same time last year. The state lottery and slot machines had relatively stable revenue year-over-year, with SEK5.8bn each in 2021 and 2022.
A number of restrictions were imposed during the Covid-19 epidemic. These included the temporary gambling liability measures and the closing down of the state-owned casino Cosmopol for portions of the year. The numbers achieved in 2022 reflect normalization of the sector, which is the first year without gambling restrictions.
Casino Cosmopol reported an increase of 93.5% in annual revenue from SEK277m to SEK536m.
Quarterly figures
The industry reported that revenue increased 3.2% to SEK7.2bn in the three months ending 31 December, compared with the SEK7.0bn they reported last year.
National lottery revenue increased by 4.2% to SEK927m in Q4 2022, compared with SEK889m reported by the regulator in the three-month period ended 31 December 2021.
The distinct Swedish vertical for restaurant casinos saw a 15.9% drop in revenue, falling from SEK63m down to SEK53m.
The Swedish self-exclusion platform Spelpaus.se was signed up by 85,000 people, an increase of 5% over the previous quarterly.
