Velipekka Nummikoski is set to leave his position at Veikkaus, marking the end of a 14-year career that witnessed one of the most transformative periods in Finland's gambling industry. Nummikoski began his tenure in 2012 as the CEO of the Finnish Slot Machine Association (RAY), later becoming Deputy CEO of Veikkaus after the merger that formed the state-owned operator in 2017.
Nummikoski’s departure comes at a crucial time for Veikkaus, as the company gears up for significant reforms in Finland’s gambling market, heading into a more competitive regulatory landscape. Initially joining RAY at a time when the digitalization of gambling was gaining traction, he played a pivotal role in navigating the complexities that arose from the merger of RAY, Veikkaus, and Fintoto. In his capacity as Deputy CEO, Nummikoski has been responsible for overseeing public affairs, corporate responsibility, and communications.
Under the guidance of CEO Olli Sarekoski, Nummikoski has contributed to various strategic initiatives within the company, focusing on the preparations necessary for the evolving Finnish gambling landscape. In his farewell remarks, Olli Sarekoski acknowledged Nummikoski’s impactful career at Veikkaus, expressing gratitude for his dedication and expertise.
“Velipekka Nummikoski has had a long and distinguished career at Veikkaus and has held several demanding management positions. I would like to warmly thank him for his significant work for the company,” said Sarekoski. He highlighted Nummikoski’s integral role in advancing the firm’s public relations, corporate responsibility, and communication strategies.
Reflecting on his time at Veikkaus, Nummikoski expressed his appreciation for the experiences he gained during a period of considerable structural changes in the industry. “It has been a great privilege to work in the midst of this transformation,” he stated. Looking ahead, Nummikoski acknowledged that with Veikkaus poised to enter a new era next year, it was also time for him to pursue new challenges, extending his heartfelt thanks to his colleagues at Veikkaus for their support.
