The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has appointed Pierre Tournier as its interim secretary general, following the departure of Maarten Haijer after nearly 20 years in the role.
Effective September 1, 2026, Tournier, who has fifteen years of experience in the industry, will step into this leadership position. He joined EGBA in November 2025 as senior director, having previously served as the international director for the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) and the director of government relations for the Remote Gambling Association (RGA).
Tournier’s background includes collaboration with national and international trade organizations, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by illegal online gambling.
In reflecting on his new responsibilities, Tournier expressed gratitude towards Haijer, stating, "I would like to pay tribute to Maarten for his outstanding work. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy." He identified the illegal gambling market as "the biggest threat to players and to the regulated sector alike," asserting that addressing this issue will be a priority during his tenure. Tournier additionally committed to maintaining high industry standards and regulatory best practices while engaging in discussions that will influence the future of the industry.
Haijer joined EGBA in 2008 and ascended to the secretary general position in 2013. Under his leadership, the association saw significant expansion, strengthening its ties with EU institutions and national regulators. Haijer was recognized for advocating for "safe, well-regulated and competitive multi-licensed markets" across Europe and for establishing the annual European Safer Gambling Week.
Reflecting on his tenure, Haijer remarked, "It has been a privilege to lead EGBA and to work alongside our members, colleagues, partners, regulators, and policymakers towards the common objective of a safe and sustainable online gambling sector in Europe." He noted the evolution of the European gambling sector during his time, highlighting its transformation from emerging start-ups into prominent digital entertainment providers with licenses worldwide. This period included outspoken support for Iceland's move to abolish its gambling monopoly and confirmation from EGBA regarding an upcoming update to its anti-money laundering guidelines.
