Flutter's CEO Peter Jackson is set to leave his position on September 30, as announced in the company's Q2 earnings report on Wednesday. His departure follows FanDuel CEO Amy Howe's resignation just three months ago, marking a significant leadership shift within Flutter in a short period.
Starting October 1, Dan Taylor, the current Flutter International chief and former CEO for the UK and Ireland, will assume the role of CEO for the group. In his statement regarding the transition, Jackson expressed confidence in Taylor’s ability to lead, stating, "this is the right point in Flutter’s journey for me to hand over the leadership of the business to Dan." He reflected on his tenure, noting how Flutter has transformed from a UK-focused entity into a global leader in online sports betting and iGaming, particularly highlighting its strong positions in the U.S.
Jackson confirmed he will assist with the leadership transition during the upcoming NFL season, officially stepping down at the end of Q3. CFO Rob Coldrake praised Jackson’s nine-year leadership, saying it was critical in establishing Flutter as an industry leader.
Peter Jackson took the top position at Flutter in January 2018, having previously served as a non-executive director for nearly five years. His professional journey includes executive roles in banking and payments, starting as a consultant for McKinsey.
Under Jackson’s leadership, Flutter expanded significantly into the U.S. market, especially after the PASPA ruling, which opened the door for sports betting. During the Q2 earnings call, Jackson remarked on the importance of taking a long-term approach to shareholder value, even when it meant facing short-term challenges. Despite this success, analysts have raised concerns regarding Flutter’s potential over-dependence on the U.S. market, particularly after the company announced its delisting from the London Stock Exchange and reported a 6% revenue decline for FanDuel in Q2.
Taylor’s promotion signals a possible shift back to a broader international focus for Flutter. The company's Q1 performance reports noted a 27% growth in international revenue, largely attributed to its acquisitions in Italy and Brazil, indicating a revitalization of Flutter's global strategy.
Looking ahead, Jackson signaled that Flutter intends to maintain its investment strategy in both U.S. sports betting and iGaming to ensure future growth.
Dan Taylor began his journey with Paddy Power Betfair in 2015, assuming various roles that culminated in his leadership of the international business by November 2024. His efforts have been pivotal in the £10 billion Stars Group acquisition and its integration of Sky Bet.
In his new role, Taylor emphasized his commitment to continuing Flutter's momentum, stating, "Our priority will be to keep delivering for our colleagues, customers, and shareholders, while building on the momentum we’ve created across the business."
As of this morning, Flutter’s share price had dropped 6% in pre-market trading, now sitting at $98.50, a decline of approximately 54% year-to-date.
