The landscape of online gaming is shifting as the Pala Band of Mission Indians of California exits the igaming space while the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut embarks on a new venture. In March, Boyd Gaming announced that it would acquire Pala Interactive, the majority-owned igaming software supplier by the Pala Band, for $170 million. This acquisition is anticipated to close in the first quarter of 2023.
In April, at the Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Conference and a formal launch event last week, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation unveiled Wondr Nation, its new online gaming entertainment company. The venture aims to utilize emerging technologies to deliver innovative experiences to players, managing Foxwoods Resort Casino's social casino, Foxwoods Online. Wondr Nation will strategically oversee real-money online casinos and sport-betting platforms, focusing on driving engagement and revenue.
Pala Interactive was established in 2013 to deliver online gaming technology solutions across regulated markets in the U.S. and Canada. The company offers a range of products, including player management systems, casino games, poker, and sports betting services, catering to both B2B and B2C clients. Currently, Pala operates in eight U.S. states and Canada but will leave a gap for tribes seeking online technology partnerships with its exit.
Jim Ryan, CEO of Pala Interactive, views the sale not as a setback for the tribal community, but as a success, marking the company's pioneering role in the U.S. online gaming sector. He noted that the tribe invested in its technology despite challenges, including a California online poker initiative that never materialized. After launching in New Jersey post-regulation, Pala quickly gained traction in the market.
Ryan explained that when Pala initially developed its platform, the tribe bought RealTime Edge Software to enhance its offerings. The acquisition by Boyd Gaming will not disrupt Pala’s existing partnerships, which include four tribal clients, and are expected to expedite growth under new ownership. Ryan emphasized that while the tribe exits, they are celebrating the success of their efforts.
Tribal operators often come with a different business perspective. Ryan highlighted that they typically pursue positive cash flow and broader brand engagement rather than competing for market percentages. Despite the complexities of online gaming, Pala aims to provide technological and operational support to tribal clients while continuing its push for tribal partnerships.
Wondr Nation, spearheaded by Anika Howard, positions itself to assist tribes and commercial jurisdictions in expanding social and online gaming efforts. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe partners with DraftKings for both its igaming and sports betting offerings. Howard noted that Wondr Nation seeks to replicate successful models like Pala's while focusing on opportunities in social gaming, online gaming, and sports betting.
Howard believes the online gaming landscape will evolve rapidly, with potential growth areas including esports and innovations in the metaverse. Wondr Nation aims to establish itself firmly within two to three years, emphasizing a customer-first approach to distinguish itself in a crowded market. In Connecticut, where both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun operate, the tribe anticipates further collaboration to strengthen their market presence and address industry challenges.
Victor Rocha, chairman of the Indian Gaming Association, expressed optimism about the future of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe's new initiative and acknowledged Foxwoods' role as a pioneer in the industry. He sees the tribe's move as a significant contribution to the evolving gaming landscape.
