The Sunday Telegraph reported on March 27 that Camelot is reportedly preparing to challenge the Gambling Commission's selection of Allwyn to operate the lottery starting in 2025. A spokesperson for Camelot declined to comment on the matter. According to the Telegraph's report, Camelot initially received the highest score in a scoring system used to assess all bids. However, the report suggested that the scoring criteria were altered by reducing the impact of a 'risk discount' meant to account for the potential shortfall in an operator’s projected contributions to good causes. With the discount lowered, Allwyn reportedly emerged as the top bidder. While a Gambling Commission spokesperson stated that the organization could not comment specifically on the legal challenge, they firmly defended the integrity of the competition process. 'We are confident that we have run a fair and robust competition,' the spokesperson emphasized. They assured that every measure was taken to ensure an equitable process, which would allow for the appointment of a licensee dedicated to protecting players and supporting good causes. Previously, the Telegraph had indicated that Camelot was expected to have its license renewed as the highest-scoring bidder, a claim that was denied by the Gambling Commission. Following Allwyn's selection, the company stated that their bid was deemed the best way to enhance contributions to good causes by revitalizing the National Lottery sustainably. Meanwhile, Camelot’s chief executive, Nigel Railton, expressed disappointment over the decision to choose Allwyn but affirmed the company's commitment to providing a strong product and generating funds for good causes until their current license expires in February 2024. 'I’m incredibly disappointed by today’s announcement, but we still have a critical job to do,' Railton said. 'We’re now carefully reviewing the Gambling Commission’s evaluation before deciding on our next steps. I’m enormously grateful to our 1,000-plus employees who have been unwavering in delivering record-breaking results during the current license.'
