The NBA has made significant strides in the realm of prediction markets, announcing on October 26 an array of partnerships and agreements as the 2026-27 season commenced. These agreements include official collaborations with Kalshi and Polymarket, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and an extension of its partnership with DraftKings to encompass sports trading.
This series of ventures marks the NBA's commitment to maintaining the integrity of sports trading while replicating its sports betting restrictions within prediction markets. With these moves, the NBA joins other major leagues such as MLB and NHL in working with prediction market operators and the CFTC. Notably, the NFL has maintained a more reserved position regarding these developments.
In detail, Kalshi and Polymarket will now serve as the NBA's “preferred prediction market exchanges,” which will utilize official league data for settling trades, implement robust safeguards, and promote NBA branding on their platforms. The partnership is viewed favorably by both the NBA and CFTC, stating their collaborative effort aims to develop a comprehensive framework for NBA-related prediction markets.
Michael Selig, Chairman of the CFTC, praised the NBA for prioritizing integrity in professional basketball and the financial market. “The NBA joins the MLB and NHL in taking a responsible step toward protecting sports integrity and market participants from abuses in prediction markets like insider trading and fraud,” he remarked. NBA's Scott Kaufman-Ross echoed this sentiment, asserting that protecting the game’s integrity is paramount and that these partnerships will foster enhanced fan engagement.
To ensure the integrity of NBA-related prediction markets, the league will impose strict protections, including market limitations and a ban on league and team personnel trading on NBA contracts. Earlier this month, the NBA reaffirmed its commitment to responsible gambling by working with its sportsbook partners to introduce betting guidelines, which will also apply to its new prediction market partners.
Kalshi and Polymarket's status as preferred exchanges means they will have access to NBA intellectual property, including logos and team names, enhancing their trading platforms. Both companies will also utilize official NBA data from Sportradar, the league's designated data provider, to facilitate and settle markets associated with the NBA.
In conjunction with these partnerships, the NBA's expanded agreement with DraftKings signifies a national promotion of its product offerings, particularly in regions where state-regulated sports betting may not be available. DraftKings’ enhanced role as an authorized operator allows for broader engagement with eligible customers across various platforms.
While the NBA embraces the prediction markets, it continues to stand apart from the NFL, which remains cautious about prediction market integration and has recently requested Supreme Court intervention regarding the regulation of sports event contracts. With its new initiatives, the NBA is not only forging ahead in the prediction market space but also establishing a clear standard for integrity in emerging market trends among U.S. sports leagues.
