In a significant move against illegal gambling, Malaysia has eliminated over 457,000 gambling-related posts and blocked nearly 1,800 websites deemed illegal. The country's Communication Ministry reported that these actions were taken during the first five months of 2025, specifically between January 1 and May 31.
The ministry confirmed that the removed posts accounted for 98% of the total 467,772 takedown requests it received, following active monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as referrals from law enforcement.
Additionally, it was noted that enforcement against gambling falls under the jurisdiction of the police. To support these efforts, the MCMC facilitates investigations and implements website blocking in accordance with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025.
In a related development, the government responded to inquiries from Mr. Prabakaran M Parameswaran, indicating that the MCMC had processed 275,787 removal requests for scam-related content from January 1, 2022, to June 30 of this year. This included instances of fake identities and impersonation.
The data revealed that the removal procedures achieved a high success rate, eliminating 262,293 posts, or 95%, based on complaints filed by service providers and in alignment with relevant laws.
Moreover, under the Online Safety Act 2025, the MCMC received five requests for the removal of financial fraud-related content during the first six months of this year, with all requests being successfully addressed.
