Unison and the Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust have joined forces to offer expert training for members of UK unions on harms associated with gambling.

Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust has teamed up with Unison to launch a new project that will provide expert training for members of UK unions on the harms associated with gambling.

YGAM offers free resources and workshops to all those who work with young people or take care of them. The National Gambling Education Programme is a PS10m project (EUR11.1m/$13.1m), backed by the Betting and Gaming Council.

These workshops provide key information about gaming and gambling within the UK. The resources will equip Unison members to protect young people against gambling-related harm. The resources include lessons plans, games, warning signs, and other information.

Unison has more than 1.3 million members and has organised YGAM’s first national training sessions. It hopes to follow this with a set of regional workshops through their education departments across the UK.

Teresa Donegan, Unison’s director of learning and organising said: “We’re really happy to have established this relationship with YGAM. Their training and resources will prove to be a valuable resource for our members as they work with youth across the public sector.”

YGAM’s operations director Kev Clland said: “We listen to practitioners and youth constantly and from our conversations, it has become clear that workers who are represented by Unison need and value more resources than ever.

This collaboration will allow us to reach out to thousands of youth to increase awareness about the risks associated with gambling and gaming.

YGAM and Newcastle and Loughborough Universities partnered last month to launch Parent Hub. This portal aims to inform parents and caregivers about the dangers of loot box. This hub contains resources, activities and information to safeguard children on the internet.
