South Korean Man Sentenced for Attempted Murder of Mother Linked to Gambling Debts

A South Korean court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to five years in prison for attempting to murder his mother in a violent attack reportedly planned with the help of an AI application. The incident, highlighted by the Kookmin Ilbo, took place on February 19 at 8:30 a.m. in an apartment located in Yeonsu District, Incheon.

Prosecutors outlined that prior to the assault, the accused consulted the AI app, posing questions such as, 'What would happen if I were hit hard on the head with a blunt object?' and 'Is it more dangerous to be hit on the side or the back of the head?' This attack emerges amid rising gambling addiction rates in South Korea, alongside an increase in violent crimes related to gambling, including instances of juvenile offenses linked to illegal betting.

On the morning of the attack, the man assaulted his 57-year-old mother with a blunt object, striking her ten times and causing significant injury. His father, who was asleep during the incident, rushed into the room upon hearing his wife's screams.

The defendant had become addicted to illegal sports gambling in 2023, leading him to take out numerous loans and borrow 200 million won ($130,000) from his mother to settle his debts. However, he lost all the money to gambling. When confronted by his mother about not being able to repay the loans, he lied, claiming that the bank had frozen his accounts. In fear of being exposed, he plotted the attack with guidance from the AI app.

Judge Son Seung-beom noted in the sentencing, 'The defendant looked into the specific methods and consequences of his crime using an AI app. He clearly recognized and considered the possibility that his mother could die during the attack.'

During the court proceedings, the man's mother, who sustained injuries but requested leniency, testified in his favor. She stated that although she required hospitalization, her injuries were not severe. The man's father also urged the court for compassion. Despite considering the parents' pleas, Judge Son condemned the crime as 'inhumane,' stating, 'The circumstances and motive are extremely reprehensible.' He emphasized that the defendant's actions were aimed at covering up the misuse of money borrowed from his mother for gambling.

Increasing scrutiny has emerged regarding stock exchange investments within South Korea, with demands for the government to restrict access to crypto-powered KOSPI derivatives on Binance. Experts warn that these financial products, which enable investors to use up to 50x leverage on stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, resemble gambling.
