Altenar has filed an opposition to Sportradar's efforts to move an ongoing case regarding sports data to arbitration in Zurich. The dispute focuses on access to live data from major U.S. sports leagues and accusations that Sportradar has engaged in anti-competitive practices.
The lawsuit was submitted to the U.S. District Court in New Jersey, alleging that Sportradar's actions violate Section 2 of the Sherman Act. In response, Sportradar has requested that the arbitration take place in Switzerland, referencing a 2021 agreement between the companies that stipulates disputes should be settled through arbitration.
Altenar stated, "Sportradar is entitled to arbitrate the disputes it actually agreed to arbitrate. It is not entitled to use the MPA as a shield against the Sherman Act in the very market the agreement carved out."
The lawsuit highlights concerns related to the NHL, NBA, MLB, and ATP, with Altenar asserting that Sportradar limits the access and pricing of live sports data necessary for sports betting services. Altenar claims that Sportradar exploits its dominant position in the sports data market to stifle competition that could affect Altenar’s sportsbook technology.
The New Jersey court will determine whether the case proceeds in federal court or shifts to arbitration in Zurich.
