WorldGaming has officially banned the use of Meta Glasses and similar devices at its events, responding to concerns from exhibitors regarding privacy and the safeguarding of intellectual property. This prohibition affects both the ICE exhibition and the iGB Affiliate Barcelona event, which are organized by WorldGaming. The company has updated its ‘Good Neighbour’ policy to prevent attendees from wearing smart glasses or any devices capable of discreetly recording audio, video, or images.
James Williams, who developed the original policy, explains that these devices pose a risk since they allow for recording without the consent or knowledge of those being filmed. According to the rules set forth in the organizer’s Code of Conduct, any photography or recording must be done openly and with the explicit consent of those involved.
Margaret Dunn, the Portfolio Director overseeing ICE and iGB Affiliate Barcelona, shared that the decision to amend the policy came after receiving feedback from exhibitors worried about their intellectual property being compromised through these smart technologies. "Copyright infringements undermine responsible progressive businesses and devalue their investment in R&D – which is the lifeblood of every creative and dynamic industry such as ours," Dunn stated. She emphasized that the events sit at the convergence of gaming and technology, making it crucial to protect and support innovative industry players through measures such as this ban.
This latest amendment aligns WorldGaming with a growing trend among venues and organizations that are placing restrictions on wearable recording technologies like smart glasses.
