UK Tote Group Shifts Focus to World Pool as Leadership Changes

The UK Tote Group has announced a transition in leadership, appointing James Coxon as the new chief executive to succeed Alex Frost at the close of this year. Coxon, who has over 20 years of experience in the betting and gaming industry, has held significant positions at DraftKings and was most recently the chief operating officer at Gaming Innovation Group.

Frost, who has been at the helm of the Tote for nearly nine years, will remain with the organization as an executive director until 2027 before assuming a non-executive director role on the board. He expressed pride in the organization’s accomplishments amidst challenges in British racing and the broader betting landscape.

“I am immensely proud of the foundations we have established which will underpin its future for many years to come,” Frost remarked.

John Williamson, the chairman of the Tote’s board, acknowledged Frost’s valuable contributions and welcomed Coxon, indicating he is “exceptionally well placed to lead the Tote through its next phase of development.”

This leadership change coincides with a broader strategic review, wherein the Tote aims to concentrate on horse racing pool betting, specifically its World Pool operations. The organization will reduce investments in its direct online consumer sector, pivoting towards a global horse racing betting system that combines wagers into a single pool.

The Tote plans to discontinue its online gaming content while maintaining its Tote.co.uk and Tote.ie platforms solely for pool betting and a limited selection of fixed-odds sports bets for users in the UK and Ireland. These platforms are set to serve as testing grounds for new pool initiatives and promotions for potential expansion through racecourses and international partners.

While this refocus will entail job reductions within the digital division, the Tote aims to create new positions within its B2B operations to offset some of the layoffs. Frost noted, "The Tote’s future is in developing horse racing betting pools both in the UK and internationally. We believe there is considerably more that we can do to accelerate this growth by investing to support our pool distribution partners including the racecourses, bookmakers, and our international commingling partners."

The Tote has witnessed significant revenue growth from its World Pool, with expectations of a 40% increase this year and further double-digit growth predicted through 2027 as the number of World Pool race days rises. Frost cited increasing regulatory pressures on digital operators and high taxation rates as key factors driving the strategic pivot towards international pool betting.
