The Big Leagues Launches as Top UK Sports Prize Draw Platform

The Big Leagues has launched a new platform aimed at capitalizing on the growing attraction of prize draws in the UK sports sector. Founded by Adam Shaw, who previously held high-level positions at Flutter Entertainment and Superbet, the platform debuted last week following a seed funding of £500,000 ($662,077).

This platform is designed specifically for sports enthusiasts, offering both paid prize draw entries for the chance to win unique sports experiences and free-to-play prediction games. Shaw, leveraging his extensive experience in the betting industry, believes there is significant consumer demand for this model.

"I wanted to find something in the UK that I thought was growing and that I thought had meaningful consumer demand behind it," Shaw stated. He identified prize draws as an engaging market segment.

As interest in prize draws rises, so does competition. The consultancy Rokker reported that the UK prize draw market generated £1.3 billion annually, with over 400 active operators.

Shaw is positioning The Big Leagues as a platform that caters to multiple sports, creating a central location for fans to engage. He noted, "Having come out of sports betting, I know that most people are interested in more than one sport. If you’ve got one website where you’re able to win prizes across all those different things, it’s just going to be somewhere that people are going to want to go."

The prizes on offer emphasize high-value experiences over traditional merchandise. Shaw elaborated, "It’s more aspirational than some of the sites out there are currently running. We’re offering proper bucket list stuff for people." This includes opportunities like attending the Masters, enjoying Champions League hospitality, or accessing a box at the Cheltenham Festival, rather than just receiving items like jerseys.

To grow its audience, The Big Leagues will utilize free-to-play prediction games, a strategy Shaw is well-versed in from his previous roles. "The free-to-play part of it, I’ve kind of learned that playbook from gambling. I know that it works," he explained. Shaw sees it as a unique opportunity in the prize draw sector, differentiating The Big Leagues from competitors.

The platform is also in active pursuit of partnerships with brands, sports entities, and charities, including collaborations with content creators. Shaw believes this can amplify their reach: "If people have got a sports audience that they’re trying to either engage or monetize, we’ve got a pretty good way of doing that."

Shaw's vision is for The Big Leagues to become the premier sports prize draw platform in the UK, offering a viable alternative to conventional gambling and fantasy sports. He expressed his aspiration, stating, "I’d love it to be the number one sports prize draw website. We need to overtake all of the people that are doing it well in their individual sports.

The company also supports regulatory clarity in the prize draw field. While the sector has seen a rise in discussion surrounding its regulations, Shaw emphasized that The Big Leagues is committed to compliance, having signed a voluntary code of practice and joined the newly formed Prize Competition Council.

"We’ve taken the highest path that we can take from a regulatory perspective as it stands today in the UK," he said, advocating for sensible regulations that protect the market while ensuring consumer demand can be met. "I think it’d be good for the market, good for the certainty and give the guardrails. That said, I don’t want it to go down the gambling path too hard because I think that’s probably gone too far now at this point."
