AI's Impact on Casino Gaming: The Rise of the New Game Category

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the global gaming industry in profound ways, especially in the design and delivery of casino games. Stake by stake, businesses are adopting AI to enhance operational efficiencies, from speeding up product development to identifying cases of bonus abuse. However, the most noticeable changes from a player's standpoint lie in personalized marketing efforts, tailored game recommendations, and improved gaming experiences.

AI's influence has now permeated the very structure of casino games, marking the advent of a new category of gaming. Andrii Savyntsev, the product owner at ICONIC21, a provider of live dealer and casino games, notes that there has always been a divide between silent random number generator (RNG) games and more engaging live dealer experiences.

"For decades, RNG games succeeded because they were designed to be fast, efficient, and solitary. It wasn't a weakness—it was the point," he explains. Players could effortlessly jump in and out of games without the commitment of a live table. This design led RNGs to become some of the most successful formats in online gaming because they minimized friction.

However, Savyntsev points out that AI technology opens up new possibilities beyond these traditional formats. "Not every player wants to sit in silence. Equally, not every player wants the commitment of a live casino table. The emergence of conversational AI is changing that dynamic," he states.

The global market for conversational AI reached a value of $14.3 billion last year, and it’s expected to expand significantly, projected to grow to $78.9 billion by 2033 with a compound annual growth rate of 23.8%. This technology is commonly used in day-to-day life, providing guidance and support in various areas, but its integration into gambling presents unique opportunities.

Savyntsev emphasizes that traditional gambling thrives on human interaction, making developments in AI both challenging and promising. He critiques a common perspective that ponders whether AI can replace human dealers, suggesting that this question overlooks the potential of AI to create distinct experiences without imitating human behavior.

This principle guided ICONIC21’s launch of iDealer Blackjack—a classic RNG blackjack game featuring an AI-powered dealer created in collaboration with RAVATAR. The AI dealer interacts with players using their names, recalls past games, and adapts to the session in real-time.

"Transparency was crucial for us. Instead of hiding that players were interfacing with an AI dealer, we were upfront about it, which paradoxically became a strength," explains Savyntsev.

Contrary to the belief that AI experiences should strive to be more human-like, he points out that making the AI's role clear removes social friction and allows players to engage with the game on their terms. This new approach, he insists, is not about replacing live dealers, which serve a different customer need.

Savyntsev argues that iDealer Blackjack enhances the existing appeal of RNG blackjack without attempting to overshadow live casino offerings. The main goal is to inject a layer of interactivity through advanced technology, making clear that, "This is not a live casino replacement."

The differentiation between AI dealers and human ones is evident in player interactions. Observational insights show that discussions with the AI often extend beyond gameplay into broader topics.

ICONIC21 is also exploring new formats. In August, they introduced iDealer Boulevard Blackjack, featuring the same AI dealer within a vibrant, themed atmosphere. This development showcases the adaptability of the AI model.

Savyntsev believes this adaptability moves the concept beyond a single game, offering operators various options that incorporate brand identity and environment into the product without supplanting traditional live experiences.

As gaming evolves with the integration of AI, it does not signal the end of human dealers. Rather, there is significant potential for AI to craft a unique type of casino experience that extends alongside both RNG and live casino practices.

He concludes that the focus shouldn't solely be on whether AI can mimic human dealers but rather on how these technologies can create valuable experiences that resonate with players in their own right. The future will depend on understanding where AI can contribute meaningfully to the player experience without trying to replicate what already exists.
