Star Gold Coast Casino Licence Suspension Extended to 2027

The suspension of the Star Gold Coast casino licence has been extended until March 31, 2027, as announced by the Queensland government. This decision follows recommendations from Special Manager Nicholas Weeks, who acknowledged the casino group's significant progress in its reform efforts, while also noting that several urgent issues remain unresolved.

Additionally, Weeks’ role has been extended to ensure continued independent monitoring and oversight of The Star Brisbane, appointing an outside consultant to assist with these responsibilities.

Queensland Attorney General Deb Frecklington emphasized the state's commitment to maintaining the integrity of its casino operations, stating, "We have continued to set clear expectations for The Star to ensure the utmost integrity of Queensland’s casino operations. Queenslanders can have full confidence that we will take immediate action if The Star fails to deliver on its obligations. Those expectations remain unchanged and, while I acknowledge the work of The Star to date, this extension will allow The Star to further demonstrate its delivery on key remediation commitments under the agreement."

This extension is not the first; it follows a series of postponements, having previously shifted from March 2025 to September 2026. The Star came under scrutiny back in 2022, being labeled unsuitable for licensing in October that year. Along with penalties and Weeks’ appointment, the licence was also suspended for a period of 90 days. The Queensland government highlighted the delay in Weeks' detailed documentation as a factor in these repeated postponements.
