PointsBet Receives Two-Day Suspension from AGCO

PointsBet has entered into a settlement with Ontario's Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO), resulting in a brief, two-day suspension of its gaming license in the province. Initially, the AGCO had recommended a five-day suspension due to the company’s subsidiary allegedly failing to properly monitor, identify, record, and report suspicious gambling activities. This issue stemmed from bets placed on Jontay Porter, a basketball player who received a lifetime ban from the NBA in 2024 for breaching gambling regulations.

As part of the settlement, PointsBet has agreed to enhance its compliance measures by conducting an independent audit, using an auditor and methodology approved by the AGCO. The company is committed to addressing any issues raised in the audit, which will be validated through an independent process.

The AGCO announced that, as part of the resolution to the regulatory concerns, PointsBet will serve a two-day suspension of its online operations in Ontario. In a statement, PointsBet Canada CEO Scott Vanderwel expressed disappointment regarding the AGCO’s proposed sanctions.
