OpenBet, a global leader in betting and gaming technology, has announced that it processed more than 175 million bets with a staggering $3 billion wagered during the recent World Cup, marking the largest betting event in the company's history.
The platform demonstrated exceptional reliability during periods of peak activity, as England's progression to the semi-finals contributed significantly to betting volumes among OpenBet's UK clients. Notably, the quarter-final match against Norway attracted nearly 5 million pre-match bets, closely followed by a matchup against Argentina, which garnered 4.65 million bets.
OpenBet's innovative offerings, including an expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop bet options, were pivotal in driving growth throughout the tournament. For the first time, markets such as 'either player to score' and 'player to be fouled' were introduced, resulting in 23 million Player Prop bets—an increase of 130% compared to Qatar 2022. In the final between Spain and Argentina, there were 831,000 BetBuilder bets, reflecting a 39% rise from four years prior.
A notable shift in betting patterns has emerged, with fans increasingly opting for more complex bet constructions. Out of the 20 most frequently placed bet combinations, ten included Player Goals or Player Stats selections, a substantial increase from just four such bets in 2022, none of which included player stats. The selection of player stats markets experienced a near fivefold growth since the last World Cup.
In-play betting also surged during the knockout rounds, with live bets representing about one-sixth of all bets placed and typically enjoying higher average stakes than pre-match bets.
OpenBet not only offered enhanced content but also provided Managed Trading Services to numerous leading platform customers worldwide, which included creating odds, supplying trading content, and managing risk throughout the tournament.
The scale of the event reached beyond just betting; OpenBet Locator™ facilitated over 200 million location checks across regulated US states during the World Cup. The company reinforced its status as a premier partner for Tier 1 operators by ensuring uninterrupted service, with no platform outages reported from the opening match through to the final. Capacity was adjusted as necessary to meet growing demand.
Nikos Konstakis, President at OpenBet, remarked, "A World Cup is one of the defining moments for our industry, and this was the largest betting event our platform has ever supported. What stands out beyond the numbers is the extent to which player behavior continues to evolve. Fans are no longer simply backing a result; they are building their own narrative around individual players, and our expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop offering met that demand while delivering the high-margin products operators need. Sustained peak load across a six-week tournament is different from managing a single event, and our platform handled it extremely well. The highest-profile operators trust us with the events that matter most, and this was the largest of them all.
