The Evolution of Football Betting: Insights for the New Season

With the World Cup behind us, many of football's top leagues are poised to kick off their new seasons this weekend. The gambling industry is also readying itself for another round of competition.

A notable trend in sports betting is the shift towards player-centric wagering rather than just team outcomes. This evolution has given rise to micro-betting, which allows bettors to engage not only with the overall result of matches but also with specific game events.

James Derbyshire, sports director of UK & Ireland at LeoVegas Group, comments on this change, noting it marks a significant transformation in how bettors interact with football betting. The focus is shifting from merely predicting final scores to making predictions about the dynamic flow of a game.

"Where we’ve been over the past 20, 30 years in football is really focused on team outcomes. And you can see now that the market is heavily shifting towards more player-based outcomes," Derbyshire states. He observes that customers now seek a platform to express their insights on aspects such as goals, corners, bookings, and shots on target.

Data is essential to driving this progress in football betting. Genius Sports, a significant player in data provision, recently cemented a crucial agreement with the European Leagues Association to become the exclusive distributor of official betting data for 18 leagues. Their GeniusIQ technology enhances tactical analysis and fan engagement by utilizing cutting-edge AI to capture thousands of data points about players during matches.

Genius Commercial Director James McKiernan illustrates how this data improves the betting experience: "At the moment an in-play bet delay exists. But if we know where the ball is going and that it’s out for a goal kick, we can minimize the bet delay, which improves the user experience."

Chris Gerstle, director of commercial and business development at European Leagues, emphasizes the critical role of official data in maintaining integrity and accuracy in increasingly complex betting markets. He asserts that strong partnerships with data providers are crucial for ensuring data authenticity, especially with the rise of micro-betting.

Although the variety of betting markets is expanding, Derbyshire points out that LeoVegas has returned to prioritizing relevance over sheer volume in their offerings. He notes, "It’s about personalization and providing customers with timely and pertinent gambling options, rather than overwhelming them with options that may no longer resonate."

While the surge in player-specific betting opportunities is exciting, it also raises concerns regarding integrity due to the increased potential for manipulation. Gerstle emphasizes the importance of collaborating with reliable partners equipped with safeguards around official data.

Genius maintains a dedicated integrity team that identifies potential spot-fixing, offers real-time support, and educates leagues on betting patterns. “Official data is a source of truth, and we always ensure that what we commercialize for betting aligns with integrity measures present in our dealings with leagues,” McKiernan assures.

There is concern regarding negative results in betting, particularly in cases such as players falling short of performance targets. To mitigate this risk, Genius fosters transparency and restricts certain markets to maintain sports integrity. McKiernan explains that educating leagues on betting behavior is essential in upholding the sport's spirit.

Technological advancements are also paving the way for fresh possibilities in football betting. Genius has rolled out BetVision, an interactive platform that combines game streaming and betting into a singular experience, significantly enhancing user engagement.

LeoVegas is also adapting to meet customer demands, focusing on simplifying how bettors combine various outcomes into a single wager. Derbyshire highlights the need to enhance discoverability and combinability of bets, addressing a common frustration among users about limitations on combining bets.

As anticipation mounts for the upcoming season, it seems that the future of football betting will hinge on how effectively companies utilize data and technology to enhance the overall betting experience for fans.
