As European football leagues prepare to kick off their new seasons this weekend, the gambling industry is also gearing up to compete. The focus in sports betting has notably shifted, with many bettors increasingly placing wagers on individual players rather than entire teams.
This trend has led to the rise of micro-betting, which enables bettors to engage more deeply by betting not just on match outcomes but on specific events within the game. James Derbyshire, the sports director for the UK and Ireland at LeoVegas Group, highlights how this change represents a significant evolution in how customers interact with football betting, moving away from simply guessing final scores to predicting how games will actually unfold.
"For the last 20 or 30 years, it was all about team outcomes. Now, the market is shifting toward outcomes based on individual players," Derbyshire says. He notes that bettors are keen on expressing their insights regarding various elements of the game, such as goals, corners, bookings, and shots on target. This shift has provided customers with newfound flexibility in their betting experience.
Data is playing an essential role in this transformation. With a focus on player statistics, companies like Genius Sports are becoming vital players in the betting landscape. Last year, Genius Sports secured a milestone agreement with the European Leagues Association, obtaining exclusive rights to collect and distribute official betting data for 18 member leagues. Their system, GeniusIQ, enhances tactical analysis, officiating, and fan engagement by providing rich data insights.
Genius has implemented advanced computer vision technology in stadiums across Europe, leveraging AI to track 10,000 data points per player every 200 milliseconds. As James McKiernan, Genius's Commercial Director, explains, this innovation helps eliminate in-play betting delays, allowing operators to offer a seamless betting experience. "If we know a goal kick is about to occur, we can accept bets without delays, improving the customer experience," he states.
The integrity of betting relies heavily on the quality of official data. Chris Gerstle, director of commercial and business development at European Leagues, stresses that maintaining reliable relationships with data providers is crucial for accuracy as betting markets become more detailed. "Without solid ties with data collection companies, it’s challenging to ensure the integrity of data," he cautions.
Even with the increase in micro-betting options, Derbyshire claims LeoVegas has come full circle, from prioritizing quantity of betting markets to focusing on relevance. "A few years ago, we concentrated on how many betting options we could provide, but now we're more concerned with which markets resonate with customers’ interests in football narratives."
He emphasizes the need for personalization and automation to ensure bettors receive timely and pertinent options, shifting away from overwhelming them with irrelevant markets. As Derbyshire puts it, the aim is to cater to narratives, like anticipating an Arsenal dominance over Man City, rather than offering numerous outcomes for betting.
However, this transition towards player-specific markets comes with an increased risk of integrity issues due to enhanced manipulation opportunities. Gerstle acknowledges the necessity for leagues to engage with trustworthy entities that uphold integrity through official data measures. Genius employs a dedicated team focused on integrity, utilizing tools to detect spot-fixing and collaborating with leagues to manage issues effectively.
Concerns about negative outcomes in sports betting persist, particularly regarding situations where a player's performance is under scrutiny. Past incidents in the NBA, where players allegedly feigned injuries in response to betting trends, have highlighted this risk. McKiernan points out that Genius works closely with leagues to monitor betting patterns and safeguard against potential abuses.
The ongoing integration of technology offers exciting prospects for the future of football betting. Genius has introduced BetVision, which allows users to stream games while placing bets in one unified interface. McKiernan believes this blend of viewing and betting offers bettors a more engaging experience. “Streaming has existed for years, yet we want to ensure it enhances fan engagement rather than being just a convenient feature,” he states.
This interactive approach extends to customer preferences for customizable bet builders, where bettors are increasingly interested in combining different wagers. Derbyshire mentions that operators face the challenge of simplifying market discovery while ensuring flexibility and relevance for bettors. "Customers are frustrated when they can't combine certain outcomes. Our goal is to provide them with the flexibility they desire to enhance their betting experience as they watch the game unfold.
