During the second day of the SBC Digital Summit, industry leaders gathered to discuss their approach to leadership amid the COVID-19 pandemic and how the sector continues to thrive despite broader economic challenges. Jesper Kärrbrink, co-founder and chairman of Green Jade Games, delivered the keynote address, which centered on the unique difficulties posed during this time. Referring to what he called the "crazy times" of the COVID era, Kärrbrink compared the ongoing situation to a plot from a Hollywood movie, prompting him to ask, "Where is this heading?" He expressed concern regarding the economic ramifications of the crisis and noted that the focus should shift from healthcare to "wealth care." Kärrbrink praised the efforts of healthcare workers operating in difficult conditions and advocated for preserving jobs as the second critical wave of response to the pandemic. He highlighted the igaming industry's relative advantage during the crisis, thanks to its youthful workforce and low instances of high-risk individuals. However, he also emphasized that the industry's sustainability comes with increased responsibility to promote responsible gaming. He referenced recent developments, such as Latvia's temporary suspension of gaming licenses and new regulations in Sweden, Belgium, and Portugal, that could impose restrictions on the gaming industry, making it imperative to prioritize responsible gaming. Kärrbrink acknowledged the remarkable adaptability of companies during this time—employees swiftly transitioned to remote work while continuing to meet project deadlines. Still, he pointed out challenges in leadership, particularly the need to balance investment and savings, and maintaining employee morale while managing distance. Adapting his management approach, Kärrbrink noted the difficulties of recognizing employees' contributions only through virtual means rather than in person. He stressed the importance of communication during this time, asserting that leaders must frequently engage with their teams to celebrate achievements. With regard to potential long-term shifts in work habits, he speculated that the pandemic could foster new working methods that enhance efficiency and work-life balance as employees work remotely. He suggests a shift towards embracing change and incorporating positive learnings from the crisis into the future. The SBC Digital Summit is running from April 27 to May 1, 2020, featuring seven conference tracks, a virtual exhibition, and networking opportunities, with approximately 10,000 delegates from around the globe expected to attend.
