In October, Italy experienced a decline in online gaming revenue, totaling €243.9 million. This figure was slightly lower than October 2020 and represented an 11.9% decrease from September 2021. The largest portion of this revenue came from online casinos, which accounted for €148.8 million, marking the best performance since May of this year. PokerStars Casino led in this sector but saw a slight reduction in its market share, falling to 9.2%.
Sisal managed to retain its second position in the online casino market with a share of 8.8%, despite also experiencing a decrease. Snai, on the other hand, increased its share to 8.0% while remaining in third place.
In contrast to the growth in casino revenue, sports betting saw a significant drop, with revenues falling to €117.9 million. This was a 51.6% decline compared to the previous year and a 37.1% decrease from September 2021. Online betting contributed €76.1 million, marking it as the second-lowest revenue for 2021 so far. The leading operators in this segment were all businesses with a retail presence: Playtech’s Snaitech led with a market share of 15.2%, followed by Sisal at 14.4% and SKS365 at 11.9%.
Retail betting also took a major hit, plummeting from September’s high of €67.9 million to just €41.8 million in October. In this area, Goldbet led the market with a share of 23.1%, followed by Snaitech at 18.8% and Eurobet at 14.9%.
On a positive note for poker, both tournaments and cash games saw a fruitful month. Tournament rake climbed to €8.4 million, the best since April, while cash game revenue reached €5.6 million, marking a 5.0% year-on-year increase. PokerStars dominated both segments, capturing 46.4% of tournament rake and 43.3% of the cash game revenue.
