Flutter Unites UK Poker Operations Under PokerStars

Flutter Entertainment is consolidating its UK poker operations under the PokerStars brand to enhance player liquidity and improve the gaming experience, further solidifying PokerStars' position as the company's primary poker platform.

This transition will commence on August 13 with the launch of PokerStars on Betfair, followed by the migration of Sky Bet and Paddy Power later in the year. Instead of maintaining separate poker networks, Flutter is unifying these brands while retaining each brand's own casino offerings.

The initial phase involves integrating PokerStars into Betfair, operating under the PokerStars on Betfair co-brand. Although the existing PokerStars UK platform will continue functioning during the transition, Flutter plans to gradually shift this platform, along with its customers and product experience, into the Betfair Casino ecosystem.

Sky Bet and Paddy Power will later follow the same integration path. Once this process is complete, all three brands will share a liquidity pool connected to the broader PokerStars Network, which encompasses Flutter's international poker ecosystem.

In the online poker industry, liquidity is a crucial asset. A larger player base leads to more active cash games, quicker seat availability, larger tournament fields, and more appealing prize pools. By consolidating player pools from its various brands, Flutter aims to offer a more robust and competitive poker experience.

This consolidation is part of a wider strategy that Flutter has already executed elsewhere in its business. Similar integrations have taken place through FanDuel in the United States, and Sisal and SNAI in Italy, where multiple brands share a unified poker framework.

According to Flutter, concentrating players within a single network not only maximizes liquidity but also creates a more consistent product experience across its portfolio.

Kim Daly, Managing Director of Betfair, called the integration a chance to merge two established brands into a more cohesive gaming offering, expressing excitement about uniting PokerStars and Betfair. He noted that the combination of PokerStars with Betfair’s sportsbook and casino products forms a comprehensive entertainment package that spans poker, sports betting, and casino gaming.

PokerStars, acquired by Flutter as part of its purchase of The Stars Group in 2020, has significantly bolstered Flutter's footprint in regulated online gaming markets. Since its inception in 2001, PokerStars has become synonymous with online poker. However, the industry has shifted, with regulatory fragmentation disrupting liquidity within national markets and presenting challenges for operators in maintaining substantial player pools.

Mike Woodbridge, Chief Commercial Officer at PokerStars, emphasized the restructuring's role in affirming PokerStars' long-term strategic importance within Flutter. He stated, "PokerStars is the most iconic brand in global poker. These changes ensure it remains a core strategic brand within Flutter’s portfolio." He added that by consolidating Flutter's player base onto a singular network, the goal is to create healthier player pools and foster greater engagement across the platform.

While the rollout features new branding for Flutter’s UK brands, the primary focus is operational rather than aesthetic. In poker, having network scale is a crucial competitive advantage impacting player retention and long-term profitability. By pooling liquidity instead of maintaining separate player bases, Flutter is positioning PokerStars at the heart of the company's poker ecosystem, simplifying its product offerings and enhancing the network effects necessary to thrive in an increasingly regulated online poker market.
