The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced the suspension of over 1,000 players from the country’s professional leagues for violating betting regulations. A total of 1,024 players have been suspended, with this development confirmed by the TFF on Monday. Among those affected are players from prominent clubs such as Galatasaray, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor. All players have been referred to the Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PFDK) as part of the ongoing investigation.
Notably, Eren Elmali, a Turkish international playing for Galatasaray, is one of the high-profile players involved. Galatasaray currently leads the Süper Lig, Turkey’s top division. Following the release of the suspension list, Elmali was removed from the national team set to compete in World Cup qualification matches against Spain and Bulgaria.
In a statement on social media, Elmali clarified that his name appeared due to a bet he placed five years ago, asserting he has not engaged in betting since then. “I want to make clear that my name is included in this file because of a betting transaction I made about five years ago involving someone other than my own team,” Elmali wrote on Instagram. “Since then, I have neither placed a bet nor had any connection to this matter.”
To aid clubs during this period, the TFF has coordinated with FIFA to allow a 15-day transfer and registration window, enabling clubs to sign new players outside of the usual transfer schedule. Furthermore, all matches in the TFF 2. Lig and TFF 3. Lig have been suspended for two weeks. However, scheduled matches in the Süper Lig and TFF 1. Lig will proceed as planned, with no matches set for the upcoming weekend due to the international break.
The TFF reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, stating, “The TFF is continuing correspondence with official institutions, and the investigation will be expanded and continued based on these responses.”
Legal expert Vahit Bıçak from Bıçak Law Firm warned that the situation could tarnish Turkish football's reputation, suggesting that the allegations may reveal systemic issues in integrity training and oversight across the sport. Bıçak stated, “If the allegations prove accurate, this suggests that betting-related misconduct is not confined to isolated incidents but may indicate systemic weaknesses in integrity education, monitoring and enforcement mechanisms across the football pyramid.” He expressed concern that the investigation's scope could undermine public confidence in the fairness of domestic competitions, crucial for maintaining sponsor, broadcaster, and fan trust.
The TFF’s regulations stipulate disciplinary actions for any player found to have engaged in betting on football, encompassing match suspensions, fines, or even permanent bans. Bıçak also indicated potential criminal implications, as involvement in illegal betting could lead to prosecution under Law No 7258, resulting in fines or imprisonment.
Bıçak believes this case could catalyze significant changes in Turkish betting regulations. “This investigation has the potential to become a turning point for Turkish football,” he remarked, advocating for enhanced regulatory frameworks and a stronger compliance culture. He emphasized the importance of balancing enforcement with educational efforts, underscoring the need for future players to comprehend both the ethical and legal ramifications of betting activities. The distinction between casual and organized illegal betting will be vital in assessing liability and potential criminal exposure, he noted, suggesting that this case might lead to comprehensive reforms in Turkish sports along with improved cooperation between regulators and law enforcement, alongside increased transparency measures.
