Polymarket Users Targeted in $3.1 Million Cyber Heist

Polymarket, a platform for prediction markets, has reported that hackers successfully stole funds from numerous users. The platform revealed that a malicious script was inserted into their user interface, which enabled the unauthorized access to user accounts. In a recent post on social media, Polymarket stated, "We've contained it & removed the affected dependency. We're contacting impacted users & refunding them in full." Blockchain monitoring company PeckShield estimated the total theft at roughly $3 million in cryptocurrency. The incident has left about 11 users impacted, and as Polymarket conducts transactions in cryptocurrency, the effects were sudden for those affected. Connor Brandi, a spokesperson for Polymarket, acknowledged the theft of user funds but refrained from sharing further details about the incident. One of the victims suspects that a Virtual Private Server (VPS) provided by Xorek Cloud may have been compromised, as they had stored their private key there. "I recently bought a VPS from Xorek Cloud and stored my private key on it. I’m not sure how the compromise happened, but that’s the only possible security risk I can think of," the user explained. In response to the incident, some commenters on the Polymarket platform ridiculed it, suggesting that the platform was provoking hackers and deserved the attack. Another user mockingly questioned, "How did you not predict this?" Polymarket has yet to disclose which provider was involved in the breach.
