Malaysia Blocks Gambling Posts and Websites in 2025

In 2025, Malaysia has successfully removed over 457,000 gambling-related posts and blocked nearly 1,800 illegal gambling websites, according to the Communication Ministry. These actions were taken between January 1 and May 31 of this year.

The Ministry reported that the significant number of removed posts represents 98% of the 467,772 takedown requests received. This is a result of proactive monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) coupled with referrals from law enforcement agencies.

Legally, the enforcement of gambling laws falls under the jurisdiction of the police. The MCMC plays a supportive role, assisting with investigations and executing website blocks as outlined in the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998 and the Online Safety Act of 2025.

In addition, a response from the government to Mr. Prabakaran M Parameswaran revealed that between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2025, the MCMC issued 275,787 requests for the removal of scam-related content, which included cases of fake identities and impersonation. The removals completed from these requests amounted to 262,293 posts, indicating a high success rate of 95% based on complaints and applicable laws.

The Online Safety Act 2025 also noted that during the first half of this year, five requests regarding financial fraud-related content were received, all of which were successfully processed for removal.
