Danish Authority Blocks 98 Unlicensed Gambling Sites

The Danish Gambling Authority, known as Spillemyndigheden, has obtained court approval to block 98 websites offering unlicensed gambling to players in Denmark. Among those targeted is Polymarket, which has recently faced increased scrutiny in the European market.

The Frederiksberg court granted Spillemyndigheden the authority to restrict access to these websites. Prior to court proceedings, the regulator notified the operators, providing them an opportunity to cease their unlicensed activities. If they did not comply, the authority could pursue judicial approval for a DNS block.

Spillemyndigheden noted that these websites were tailored specifically for the Danish market, featuring Danish-language content, the use of Danish kroner, and even local payment options and customer support in Danish.

Furthermore, the Danish Gambling Authority stated that only operators with a legitimate license are permitted to offer games of chance within Denmark. Licensed companies will display an official gambling license mark, allowing customers to verify their legitimacy against the regulator’s official list.

The authority cautioned that illegal operators could easily switch domains, which necessitates that customers ensure they are accessing legitimate sites.

With this latest action, authorities in Denmark have now banned a total of 870 websites. DNS blocking serves as a primary method in the fight against unregulated gaming; however, operators can move to new sites quickly.

The inclusion of Polymarket on this list highlights a growing focus on prediction markets in Europe, as Denmark explores possibilities for allowing gambling activities that lack proper authorization.
