After expressing its concerns over the increase of gambling advertisements and promotions, The Media Council of Kenya has called on Kenya’s media to be vigilant.
David Omwoyo Omwoyo, MCK’s chief executive and secretary, appealed to journalists, media practitioners, and media enterprises to reiterate that gambling advertising is only allowed for licensed activities.
The BCLB is responsible for granting licenses to operators who offer gambling, such as betting and lotteries.
The MCK, however, regulates and supervises the media sector. This includes ensuring that journalists and media organizations write fair, accurate, and unbiased articles about matters of public concern.
Omwoyo stated that media organizations must adhere to the Media Council Act 2013 and ensure that any advertising or promotion of gambling on their platforms promotes only licensed activities.
Omwoyo stated that the advisory was issued to protect investors and ensure media standards in relation to advertising of gaming activities.
