On Sunday, the government of Macau announced a mass-testing initiative in response to a new Covid-19 outbreak, with results expected by Tuesday. In light of the situation, most services, including banks, schools, and many businesses, have been closed, though casinos remain operational.
Macau continues to adopt a "covid-zero" strategy, making this outbreak the first significant one in months. While regulations vary by concessionaire, all amenities and restaurants across the six gaming operators in Macau are closed, apart from some options for takeaway and in-room dining.
This development poses a significant challenge for the tourism-dependent gaming sector, likely leading to a drop in gross gambling revenue. Following the announcement, the shares of all six concessionaires fell by approximately 4-8%.
Macau's economy has struggled to return to pre-pandemic levels, with the city’s GDP currently less than half of what it was in 2019. In response, the government is preparing to implement new gambling reforms aimed at revitalizing the industry.
