After Jordan Spieth voiced concerns that gambling in golf needs to be addressed by the PGA Tour, fellow golfer Matt Fitzpatrick echoed his sentiments, indicating that it has become a significant issue. Fitzpatrick made these remarks during a press conference prior to this week’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
“It’s definitely becoming a problem,” Fitzpatrick stated. He highlighted the ease with which someone can influence a bet in golf, mentioning scenarios like shouting during a player’s backswing or putting stroke. “That is really hard to monitor, but it is definitely an issue,” he noted.
Fitzpatrick went on to describe his experiences, emphasizing that every professional golfer has likely received abusive messages linked to gambling. “I mean, you could see it this week,” he added.
In response to the growing concern, the R&A has introduced a new code of conduct for the Open Championship. This includes on-course signs urging fans to respect players, the venue, and each other while enjoying the event responsibly.
Mark Darbon, the R&A’s chief executive, remarked on the distinctive atmosphere at The Open, stating, “It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans, and the traditions of the Championship.”
Fitzpatrick recently faced negative fan interactions during The Players Championship while competing against Cameron Young. Supporters in the U.S. were vocally rooting for Young, who ultimately won the tournament. However, Fitzpatrick later claimed victory against Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage, securing his place among the favorites for this week’s major event.
As the Open Championship takes place, there’s continued excitement for the England national team as they aim for their first World Cup since 1966. Fitzpatrick shared, “It’s difficult because I’ve had 20 quid on England to win the World Cup, but at the same time, if it doesn’t come in, I’m not going to send a message to Harry Kane and be like, ‘Why did you play rubbish?’” He acknowledged that many individuals struggle with similar issues related to betting.
Fitzpatrick expressed his appreciation for events like the WM Phoenix Open and the Ryder Cup, which offer a more spirited atmosphere compared to typical PGA Tour events. “I’m all for an atmosphere. Obviously, I don’t want it to cross a line,” he commented, before adding, “When you’re getting personally attacked, it’s just ridiculous.”
