Polymarket Terminates CMO Amid Investigation

Polymarket, a platform focused on prediction markets, has dismissed its Chief Marketing Officer, Matthew Modabber, following an internal investigation into the company’s promotional practices. The investigation drew significant regulatory attention and raised concerns among investors regarding the company’s marketing strategies.

This change in leadership was first reported by The New York Post and marks the conclusion of Modabber's long-term working relationship with the firm’s founder and CEO, Shayne Coplan. Modabber joined Polymarket in 2024, making him one of the company's earliest executives.

Currently, the company is working on finalizing a separation agreement with Modabber, but neither party has publicly commented on his termination.

The internal investigation delved into allegations of questionable marketing tactics. Specific concerns included the use of staged betting videos, insufficiently disclosed partnerships with social media influencers, and the presentation of simulated trades as if they represented genuine customer profits. These issues initially surfaced in a Wall Street Journal report earlier this year.

It was revealed that certain content creators had published videos misleadingly depicting customers as having won nearly $1.9 million on the platform. Such content was part of broader efforts aimed at attracting new users to Polymarket.

The investigation extended beyond promotional practices. A separate inquiry by Politico indicated a focus on more than $2.5 million in payments processed through Modabber’s personal PayPal account, which were distributed to over 800 recipients between January 2025 and February 2026. Among these transactions, at least $350,000 was reportedly allocated to identified influencers, raising potential issues regarding transparency and compliance.

Polymarket’s recent changes align with efforts to bolster its internal controls and enhance adherence to regulatory standards. Modabber's dismissal raises questions about whether Polymarket is attempting to improve its public image as it considers an Initial Public Offering (IPO). However, the company has not made any public statements regarding speculations about a potential IPO.

Polymarket has not yet responded to requests for comments from iGB.
