Yggdrasil Changes Game Development with Innovative Strategies

Yggdrasil, a prominent player in the online casino industry, is keenly aware that keeping players engaged requires a constant influx of fresh content. The challenge is multifaceted, particularly as consumers are inundated with entertainment options that compete for their attention. While the industry sees thousands of new games released each year, approximately ten percent more each quarter, sheer volume does not guarantee diversity. Many developers opt for the safety of reskinning existing games instead of risking innovations that could fail.

James Curwen, the chief executive of Yggdrasil, identifies this dilemma as a core issue in the industry. "The industry has a content problem," he states. "There are thousands of games being released and too many of them are variations of something that already exists."

He attributes this trend to economic factors. Creating a new game demands months of work and significant financial investment, which makes companies hesitant to venture into untested ideas. "Building on something that already works becomes the safer option," Curwen explains.

To tackle this, Curwen is focused on shifting the risk-reward dynamic in game creation. He believes that if creators can experiment quickly and cost-effectively, they can take bolder risks, reducing the consequences of less successful attempts. "Technology changes the equation," he notes. "If we can make development faster and significantly more cost-efficient, creators can afford to experiment again."

Curwen argues that we are nearing the end of the era of mere reskinning in the gaming world. He emphasizes, "Players don’t need another 100 versions of effectively the same game. The ambition is to give talented creators the freedom to try more ideas."

Yggdrasil aims to provide such freedom through two new initiatives: Game in a Box and Studio in a Box. Game in a Box streamlines the development process, enabling greater flexibility and efficiency. Meanwhile, Studio in a Box allows businesses to develop a portfolio of original games without the need to set up a conventional studio.

The Game in a Box platform reorganizes the traditional multi-stage development process, which typically requires different teams and numerous iterations. This new approach allows creators to maintain greater control over their game’s evolution. Currently, Yggdrasil is utilizing this system internally and is in the pilot phase with select partners before a broader rollout.

As an example, Curwen cites Raptor 2, which underwent 17 versions in just two weeks. "Speed of iteration is probably the biggest difference," he explains. With Game in a Box, significant changes can be addressed in real-time, significantly enhancing the development process.

However, Curwen emphasizes that the primary goal is not just to accelerate production but to empower talented creators. "The ambition isn’t to use technology to make average games faster. It’s to give talented creators the freedom to try more ideas and hopefully produce better games," he says.

Initially focused on Yggdrasil’s internal processes, the Game in a Box concept has revealed broader possibilities. Traditionally, establishing a game studio involves assembling a full team, which can be prohibitively expensive. Curwen notes that many individuals in the industry have strong concepts or brands but lack the resources to form a complete studio.

Studio in a Box addresses this gap by providing partners access to Yggdrasil’s technology and infrastructure, allowing them to focus on branding and creative direction. "The priority is to prove the model properly; make sure the games perform and demonstrate that it works commercially," Curwen states.
