Polymarket, a platform specializing in prediction markets, has parted ways with its Chief Marketing Officer, Matthew Modabber, amid an investigation into the company's promotional practices.
This inquiry has attracted attention from regulators and has raised concerns among investors regarding the company's marketing strategies, leading to this significant leadership change.
First reported by The New York Post, Modabber’s departure comes after a lengthy professional association with Shayne Coplan, the founder and CEO of Polymarket. Modabber joined the company in 2024, becoming one of its original executives.
As of now, Polymarket is said to be in the process of finalizing a separation agreement, but neither the company nor Modabber has publicly commented on the dismissal.
The internal investigation centered on allegations that Polymarket utilized staged betting videos and partnered with social media influencers without adequate disclosure. Additionally, it was claimed that the company misrepresented simulated trades as actual customer profits. A earlier Wall Street Journal report highlighted that some online content creators inaccurately showcased customers purportedly winning around $1.9 million on the platform, as part of an effort to draw new users to Polymarket's offerings.
The investigation didn't just stop at promotional tactics. A separate Politico inquiry indicated that there was scrutiny surrounding more than $2.5 million in payments that were funneled through Modabber’s personal PayPal account to over 800 individuals between January 2025 and February 2026. Among those payments, at least $350,000 was noted to have gone to specific influencers, raising potential compliance and disclosure concerns. In light of these developments, Polymarket is taking steps to strengthen its internal controls and improve regulatory adherence.
The firing of Modabber brings up new questions about Polymarket's intentions concerning its public image, especially as it prepares for a possible Initial Public Offering (IPO). However, Polymarket has yet to make any public remarks regarding speculation about pursuing an IPO.
Polymarket did not provide immediate comments in response to inquiries by iGB.
