Flutter Entertainment has announced the closure of its Betfair operations in Brazil, alongside job cuts, in response to the recent online betting ban initiated by the Brazilian government. This decision follows the company's earlier announcement of 1,400 job reductions and the termination of its Sky Bet Malta office.
In light of these changes, Flutter will pivot its focus to Betnacional, the Brazilian brand it acquired, as it awaits further clarity regarding the country's regulatory environment. A representative from Flutter Brazil stated, "After reviewing its commercial strategy, Flutter Brazil has decided to concentrate its efforts on a single brand, Betnacional, leading to the closure of Betfair’s operations in the country. Once there is clarity on the regulatory landscape, the company will direct resources and expertise to the local brand, strengthening its focus on product and simplifying its business model."
Furthermore, Flutter confirmed there would be additional workforce reductions across various business sectors, attributing these layoffs to a Provisional Measure (1,394/2026) that has temporarily suspended commercial activities and revenue.
A spokesperson from Flutter Brazil conveyed regret over the layoffs, emphasizing the company's commitment to treating affected employees with respect and following labor regulations. The statement reiterated the importance of nurturing a regulated and supervised betting environment to ensure consumer protection and curb illegal activities.
Following the announcement, a wave of posts from employees affected by the layoffs appeared on LinkedIn. Reports from October 22 indicated that the cuts impacted teams across casino operations, customer support, content, and commercial sectors.
These latest job losses come shortly after Flutter had already indicated that up to 1,400 positions might face redundancy in the UK and Ireland divisions, in conjunction with the closure of its Malta operation as part of a broader restructuring effort.
The job cuts are primarily linked to a provisional measure enacted by Brazilian President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, which aims to regulate fixed-odds betting and online casino services, thereby ceasing operations for many operators across Brazil. Following the signing of this measure, both Betnacional and Betfair Brazil halted their operations immediately, with licenses for licensed betting websites being revoked by October 6.
Flutter had initially entered the Brazilian market by acquiring a controlling interest in NSX Group, investing around $350 million for a 56% stake in Betnacional, with the potential for further investment in the future. The closure of Betfair Brazil marks a significant shift in Flutter's growth strategy, and the company's next steps will largely hinge on the outcomes of congressional discussions regarding the provisional betting measure and any resulting regulatory framework that might allow for the resumption of operations in Brazil.
