Entain has launched a campaign titled "What’s at Stake" to oppose a potential increase in the UK’s Machine Games Duty that could rise from 20% to 40%. The betting operator warns that this tax hike could lead to the closure of betting shops, resulting in job losses and diminished high street activity.
Scheduled to coincide with the UK government’s Autumn Budget set for the end of October, the campaign highlights the adverse effects of raising the Machine Games Duty. Entain argues that such closures not only threaten local employment but also negatively impact the horse racing industry and reduce consumers' access to knowledgeable staff in betting shops.
The issue is pressing, as betting shops across the UK are already facing challenges, evidenced by Betfred's announcement in July regarding the closure of approximately 132 locations. In response to the ongoing difficulties in the betting retail sector, the Betting and Gaming Council has initiated its own campaign called "Back Our Betting Shops," aimed at supporting these establishments against increasing pressures.
