AGCO Imposes Two-Day Suspension on PointsBet

PointsBet has come to an agreement with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) that results in a brief suspension of its license for only two days in the province. The AGCO had initially proposed a longer suspension of five days, citing failures by PointsBet's subsidiary to adequately monitor, identify, record, and report suspicious gambling activities.

This situation arose from bets placed on basketball player Jontay Porter, who was banned for life by the NBA in 2024 for breaching gambling regulations.

In response to the settlement, PointsBet will enhance its controls by conducting an independent audit, utilizing an auditor and methodology approved by the AGCO. The company also commits to addressing any issues that arise from the audit, which will be subject to independent validation.

Upon learning about the AGCO's initial enforcement actions, Scott Vanderwel, CEO of PointsBet Canada, expressed disappointment regarding the proposed sanction.
