OpenBet, a prominent global provider of betting and gaming technology, announced that it processed over 175 million bets and $3 billion in stakes during the World Cup 2026, marking the largest betting event in the company's history. The platform performed reliably even during peak activity periods.
England's journey to the semi-finals significantly boosted betting volumes among OpenBet’s UK-facing customers. Notably, the Norway quarter-final attracted nearly 5 million pre-match bets, with the match against Argentina following close behind at 4.65 million bets.
OpenBet's recently expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop functions contributed substantially to this growth. These innovations included new market options like ‘either player to score’ and ‘player to be fouled,’ resulting in 23 million Player Prop bets, which is a 130% increase compared to the previous World Cup in Qatar 2022. The championship match featuring Spain and Argentina alone generated 831,000 BetBuilder bets, representing a 39% rise from four years ago.
The tournament illustrated a significant change in fan betting behavior. Among the most popular bet combinations, ten out of twenty involved player goals or player stats, a stark increase from just four in the 2022 tournament, which made no reference to player statistics. There was a nearly fivefold increase in selections from player stats markets compared to the last World Cup.
As the tournament advanced, in-play betting grew, culminating in approximately one out of every six bets being placed live during the knockout rounds, where live bets had considerably higher average stakes than pre-match bets.
In addition to its betting content, OpenBet offered Managed Trading Services to key customers worldwide, managing odds, providing trading content, and overseeing risk and liability throughout the tournament.
The World Cup's impact extended beyond simple betting; OpenBet Locator™ conducted over 200 million location checks during the event across regulated U.S. states. Amassing a strong reputation among Tier 1 operators worldwide, OpenBet ensured uninterrupted service without any platform outages from the opening match through to the final, successfully scaling its capacity to meet demand.
Nikos Konstakis, President at OpenBet, remarked, "A World Cup is one of the defining moments for our industry, and this was the largest betting event our platform has ever supported. What stands out beyond the numbers is the extent to which player behaviour continues to evolve. Fans are no longer simply backing a result; they are building their own narrative around individual players. Our expanded BetBuilder and Player Prop offering met that demand while delivering the high-margin products operators need. Sustained peak load across a six-week tournament differs from managing a single event, and our platform handled it extremely well. The highest-profile operators trust us with the events that matter most, and this was the largest of them all."
