Entain, the parent company of Ladbrokes and Coral, has announced plans to cut around 500 jobs globally as part of an efficiency initiative spearheaded by new Chief Financial Officer Michael Snape.
This decision, which was initially reported by Reuters, primarily affects roles within the company’s central corporate functions, including finance, human resources, product, and technology.
Entain clarified that these layoffs are not a direct response to the recent increases in UK Remote Gambling Duty. Instead, they are part of a broader strategy focused on long-term cost optimization.
An Entain spokesperson expressed in a statement to iGB, "As part of our ongoing focus on enhancing Entain’s operational efficiency and agility, we have begun implementing organizational changes which will regrettably impact a number of roles across the Group over the months ahead." The spokesperson added that these changes are intended to strengthen the company and maximize shareholder value, emphasizing that consultations with affected employees will take place to provide support during the transition.
This announcement comes at a time when the gambling sector is facing heightened regulatory and fiscal challenges in the UK and other European markets. The industry is grappling with growing compliance costs, proposals for stricter online advertising regulations, and increased betting duties.
Earlier in April, Entain revealed the closure of 39 Ladbrokes stores in Ireland, having reportedly stepped back from talks to sell its entire Ladbrokes retail estate in that market. At that time, a Ladbrokes spokesperson stated, "We continually review our retail estate to ensure our business remains competitive and financially sustainable." They highlighted the importance of engaging with staff during the consultation process, with a particular focus on redeployment opportunities.
Additionally, Entain is set to divest from its Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) business, having agreed to sell a 20% stake in Entain CEE to EMMA Capital, a joint venture partner.
