In the third quarter, Swedish gambling revenue rose by 4.7% year-on-year, reaching SEK6.3 billion (£523.6 million/€622.1 million/$699.6 million). This figure surpassed the SEK6.04 billion recorded during the same quarter in 2020 but saw a decline of 3.0% compared to the SEK6.5 billion reported in the second quarter of the current year.
Commercial online betting and gambling was a significant contributor, generating SEK3.91 billion, a 5.4% increase from last year and accounting for 61.8% of the total turnover for Q3. In contrast, revenue from state lotteries and land-based slot machines fell by 5.7% to SEK1.39 billion, while revenue from charitable lotteries rose by 4.2% to SEK803 million.
For the first time since the onset of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), Spelinspektionen reported revenue from Casino Cosmopol’s land-based operations. The Svenska Spel subsidiary welcomed customers back, contributing SEK132 million in revenue for the quarter.
Revenues from charity bingo games dipped by 2% to SEK46 million, and revenue from land-based commercial games, including restaurant casinos, plummeted 47% to SEK47 million.
During this quarter, a total of 95 operators were active, and by the end of the period, approximately 65,500 consumers had opted for self-exclusion from gambling through the Spelpaus.se program.
